New Recruitment Specific URL Shortener Aims to Save Recruiters Time and Money

If you announce job opportunities on many social media site (especially Twitter or Facebook) or via text / SMS service then you are certainly familiar with URL shorteners (URLS).

For those of you who are not familiar with URL shorteners, a URLS is an online tool that takes a long URL (which stands for uniform resource locator or website address) and shortens it to a length more practical for mobile and micro blogging environments. The most popular today are Bit.ly, Ow.ly, and Tiny.cc.

Many URLs are much longer than the standard 140 characters allowed on Twitter, so a URLS is used to make the web address fit. URLs usually go to about 20 characters in length. For instance, the URL to this article is – http://socialmediarecruitment.com/blog/2010/02/17/new-recruitment-specific-url-shortener-aims-to-save-recruiters-time-and-money/. That is well over 100 characters long. When I change it to a Bit.Ly shortened URL, http://bit.ly/9udEtb, I get it down to 20 characters which gives me 120 characters to add along with it when I post it to Twitter (twitter.com/socmedrec).

Recently, Estonian HR professional Jüri Kaljundi launched his new URLS site called Emp.ly to aid recruiters in shortening their job posting URLs. Emp.ly looks like the English word “employ” if you replace the dot with an ‘O.’ Kaljundi hopes this shortened URL will attract recruiters and job seekers alike to recognize this link as an employment opportunity, not just a link to a non-job related web page.

A quick review of the site reveals that the tool is more than just a URL shortener…in fact it’s not really a URLS at all. Rather it is a free career site for small businesses that don’t have an applicant tracking system or a careers page. All you do is sign up, link your social media accounts and you are ready to post job. Once you have entered a job description etc., the site generates a short URL. Then, you can use the site to push your vacancy out to Facebook, Twitter, Google Base, Simply Hired, and Indeed. Further, the site stores your announcement for job seekers to view and apply to. The site also offers view stats by medium and date.

Kaljundi states that a pro version of the tool is in the works. Hopefully this tool will have even more functionality and maybe even offer a simple URL shortener that can be used as a redirect to another site.
