Lessons Learned from Expedia’s Front Lines

“I jumped off a cliff and I survived.” No, Expedia’s Kristin Graham wasn’t explicitly referring to social media, however many would agree that the statement could easily describe her state of mind after first entering the social space.  In truth, Graham had briefly digressed to relate an adventure in paragliding before quickly launching back into her rapid-fire presentation on social media lessons learned at Expedia.

In Thursday’s sold out presentation, Graham reassured newbies that everyone has to start somewhere while advising the more experienced that an in-depth strategy was the key to taking their game to the next level.  She stressed the importance of finding your “rock star” attributes, illustrating how well it’s worked for Expedia’s TripAdvisor with their “Cities I’ve Visited” app – Facebook’s 2nd most popular application.

Graham captivated and entertained the audience with candid insights and a snappy sense of humor – which is why it seems only fitting to note “lesson learned” number seven: humor is subjective.  This challenge is inherent to social media where communication and conversations often occur absent the help of visual or verbal cues.  After sharing an internally controversial Expedia recruiting video, Graham explained that it’s not always necessary to have a meeting of the minds. Instead, she stressed the necessity of staying true to your brand and identity when developing messaging and communication assets.

The reminder that humor is extremely personal and should be incorporated with care was just one of the many tips (see links below for the complete play-by-play) that Kristin shared at last week’s dynamic event.  Special thanks to Expedia and Kristin Graham for sharing their lessons learned and hosting this memorable and engaging event!
